The top two questions people usually ask when trying to start an online auction business are:

"Where do I get stuff to sell on eBay"? and
" What are the Best Products to sell on eBay"?

After all, these are very important questions to answer and are a key part in having an auction business, right? Of course, you have to have something to make money with right? You also want to have the best products to sell, right?

Okay, these are legitimate questions. I'm going to deal with the latter, and we'll tackle the other question elsewhere under the eBay Products category.

In dealing with the issue of finding the best product to sell on eBay, first, it's important to realize an important part to selling on eBay is determining what market to sell in. Do you want to sell clothing items? Do you want to sell electronics? Are you a toy seller?

Most of the time, people who are looking for merchandise to sell on eBay, only think of having a physical hard goods to sell with the flea market approach of buying bulk products of all types and sizes from paper to electronics, toothbrushes to TV's and then selling them all at once! That is fine if that is what you want to do, but it is much harder to become profitable overall because you're competing in so many varying markets and each market will be different.

For instance, there may not be as much profit in one market as there is in another. What this means is you don't want to lose money in one area as that will drain your profits from another area. Plus, with so many different items, there is no way you can have expertise in them all and that could cause you unwanted problems.

When it comes to answering the questions "what to sell on eBay" or "what is the best product to sell on eBay" or other online auction, you can take the flea market approach, but my suggestion would be to expertise in a specific niche market and then find products to sell in that specific niche market. Become an expert in your field and you will do much better incorporating back end selling strategies and up-sell techniques discussed in this eBay selling category as well as throughout the rest of this site!

However, how can you make money with niche items in a niche market if you don't have a niche market to sell in or know how to find one?

Well, I can't tell you what to sell on eBay, but what I can do is help you identify niche markets and give you some ideas of how to determine what the best products to sell on ebay are for YOU in those markets.

How to identify an auction niche market and
locate product to sell on eBay for your niche!

When it comes to identifying a niche market, let me tell you where you need to begin when identifying a niche. Remember, it is important to identify a niche market with an eBay product that people want and will buy.

1. Do what you love and are passionate about and do not give up. You want to build a business doing something that you enjoy! You don't want to be doing something in which you have no interest, and you don't want to run a business doing what you don't love or enjoy. You don't want to hate what you do because you'll be doing it for a long time.

2. Look at your hobbies, interests, former careers etc. What is your passion? What are the hobbies that you enjoy doing? Ask yourself those types of questions. You'll pick a target market according to your interest. (Example, if you enjoy sports and are a football coach, you know you'll be researching the target market of football for an identifiable market.)

It's a big plus to start with things you know and have experience with but also don't make the mistake of selling only things you like or selling the exact same thing everyone else is selling or going after the trendiest, coolest things you can find. The competition on eBay is getting extremely fierce in many product areas. It is becoming increasingly difficult to sell the same things everyone else is selling and make a healthy profit now. In other words, the most listings for a specific item doesn't mean the it's the best item to sell on eBay. You need your own niche. Don't get caught in a war to undercut your competitors in a race to the bottom dollar. Remember the reason you have a business is to produce a profit so we need to be smart about how we go about it. Racing to the bottom means cutting your profits!

3. Once you've got that figured out, then you'll begin to research your niche market from this and see if you can find merchandise that people want and will buy. If you can find products that fit these criteria, then you will have fun doing what you like or possibly love as you are able to offer people goods or services that they are willing to pay for. This is how you will make money selling on eBay.

Now here's how to develop a Search Strategy
to find the right things to sell on eBay.

Remember, your goal is to make a profit! You need to profit from the things people want and will buy but in a niche that YOU enjoy. Don't worry if you don't know a lot about your niche before you start selling in it. You'll learn about it as you go and you'll happy to do so because you enjoy it.

Whatever product you're considering selling, you need to do the proper research to determine if you have a profitable niche market and items that people want and will buy.

Here's a very effective way to do it:

Check the completed auctions for your niche product or similar items.
(You'll need to log in to your account.) If you have several niche products, then you'll research them as well.

Do this with an advanced search by clicking the advanced search link on eBay's home page.

Fill in the keywords for the item(s) that you're researching. You can search completed listings only as well as by title and description.

Ebay Advanced Search

You will want to search by completed listings only. This will list all of the completed items from your search that have SOLD within the last month! This will give you a good indication or at least a ballpark determination if this item is selling on eBay and what it is selling for if at all!

See if the same types or similar products to your niche are being sold and what the final sale amounts are.

Compare them and then go look at the actual auction description to see if there is anything that could have been done in the auction listing that would have raised the final bid amount. Were the pictures poor quality? Was the headline misspelled in the title? Would a guarantee have made a difference? You will use this information to make your auction listings more appealing to your target audience so that you can increase your final bid amounts.

Researching the individual auctions and looking to see if people are bidding on the items that are the same or at least related to your niche product will give you an indication of the strength of that market.

You'll be able to determine if people want what you have to offer and are willing to pay you for it. This is key!

If the search tells you that the market is saturated with tons of similar types of items with no bids, then you need to reconsider trying another product. Don't do it!

You do need to note however, that depending on the category, seeing a lot of similar items listed may be good or bad so don't just count the listings.

If absolutely no one else is offering those types of items for sale, you'll need to determine if it's due to lack of demand or if it's because no one else can get the item. The will tell help you to know if that is a good item to sell on eBay or not.

I've found that most sellers will try to sell things before checking the market to see if their item is even going to sell. There are thousands of the same types of auction listings that never sell, yet they keep being listed! Don't make that mistake! If you see this activity regarding what you are considering selling, then you may want to consider another item as this may not be the best product to sell on eBay.
